“An Australian cold-chain team seamlessly replaced worn guide wheels with our Vulkollan® wheels, securing 24/7 dairy AS/RS operations and cutting downtime by 90%.”

Customer

The facility is a state-of-the-art automated cold storage warehouse (AS/RS) operated by a leading Australian cold-chain logistics provider. The center runs 12 high-speed stacker cranes reaching heights of up to 30 meters, operating 24/7 in an ultra-low temperature environment (down to -25°C) to secure the uninterrupted supply chain.

The system is dedicated to high-density, automated handling of sensitive, palletized ice cream and dairy products, ensuring these temperature-critical goods are seamlessly moved from processing lines to major Australian supermarket networks without breaking the cold chain.

Requirement

Operating in an Australian cold-chain environment with continuous heavy-duty duty cycles, the client demanded a severe upgrade for their stacker crane guide wheels to eliminate the following operational bottlenecks:

1. Anti-Delamination Under Extreme Thermal Fluctuations: The original guide wheels suffered from intense heat build-up due to continuous high-speed lateral guiding and frequent braking. This internal thermal stress, combined with the rapid temperature shifts between the freezing cold storage room (-25°C) and warmer transition zones, caused the polyurethane tread to peel away (delaminate) from the metal core every 6 months.

2. Drastic Reduction in High-Access Maintenance Downtime: Replacing guide wheels at a height of 30 meters required specialized high-access scissor lifts and at least 4+ hours of complete crane shutdown. This cost thousands of AUD in lost productivity for the high-throughput dairy and ice cream supply chain.

3. Vibration Dampening for Laser Positioning Accuracy: Worn and hardened guide wheels caused excessive track vibrations. These vibrations directly interfered with the precision of the cranes' laser positioning sensors, leading to unexpected system faults and positioning errors during high-speed pallet retrieval.

4. High Wear Resistance Under Lateral Loads: Constant high-speed acceleration created massive lateral forces on the guide rollers. The material required exceptional dimensional stability to prevent flattening or changing shape.

Solution

To solve these critical issues, the engineering team delivered a customized Vulkollan® Polyurethane Guide Wheel Solution specifically optimized for Australian cold-chain operations:

High-Performance Polyurethane Stacker Crane Wheels for Australian AS/RS

1. Premium Material Selection: Switched the guide wheel tread to genuine Vulkollan® (Shore A 93–95). This high-performance elastomer provides an elite dynamic load-bearing capacity, ultra-low rolling resistance, and exceptional physical integrity, preventing it from softening during heatwaves or becoming brittle at -25°C.

2. Advanced Chemical Bonding Pre-treatment: Utilized high-tensile cast iron hubs paired with a nano-grade chemical bonding agent. This ensures a flawless, high-strength fusion between the polyurethane layer and the core, guaranteeing zero risk of delamination even under peak lateral impact loads.

3. Precision-Guided Design: Optimized tread geometry ensures smooth contact with the guide rails, dampening structural vibrations by over 80% and enhancing the crane’s laser positioning accuracy from 5 mm to an elite 1 mm.

Operational Continuity Achieved:

By switching to our high-dynamic Vulkollan® guide rollers, the facility completely eliminated emergency "catastrophic" wheel failures. The reliable supply chain for Australia's ice cream and dairy products is now fully secured, achieving a 3-5% reduction in power consumption per crane due to lower rolling resistance.
